The 5-5^th Infantry Regiment was raised on 1^st July 1947 in Schalkhaar. It was made up of conscripts from the year 1947. It left for Dutch East India onboard “Zuiderkruis” on 17^th December 1947 and arrived in Semarang on 16^th January 1948. Directly of its arrival the 4^th company was transferred to the 5-13^th Regiment Infanterie in Cheribon, which had only been in existence for a month. After which the 4^th company was spread among other battalions on Java.
The 5-5^th Infantry Regiment was stationed around Salatiga together with 2-6^th Infantry Regiment and 2-7^th Infantry Regiment. On 9^th April 1948 the 5-5^th Infantry Regiment took over the positions from 2-6^th Infantry Regiment in Kopeng, Karangdoeren, Setoegoer, Dadapajam and Reksosari. On 5^th November 1948 the 5-5^th Infantry Regiment was relieved by 411^th Infantry Battalion and stationed in Dadapajam, Reksosari and Telogo.
During the 2^nd Police Action on 19^th December 1948 the 5-5^th Infantry Regiment moved over land to Djocjacarta. Except the pioneers who flew to Djocjacarta together with the commandos. Being reunited with the rest of the 5-5^th Infantry Regiment on 21^st December 1948 when it arrived in Djocjacarta. The day after on 22^nd December 1948 the 5-5^th Infantry Regiment was ordered to advance towards Magelang, which already was seized by Infanterie V KNIL. Taking over the securing of Magelang on 23^rd December 1948. On 24^th December the 5-5^th Infantry Regiment seized Temanggoeng and on 25^th December Parakan. In connexion with operation “Zuid” the 5-5^th Regiment Infanterie was transferred to Djocjacarta on 12^th and 13^th January 1949. This action started on 18^th January 1948 and cleared the area south of Djocjacarta. After this action the 5-5^th Infantry Regiment took up positions in Sentolo, Barongan, Bantoel and Karangsemoet but after three weeks they were cleared. On 6^th March 1949 the Support Company from the 5^th Garde Regiment Grenadiers was transferred to the 5-5^th Infantry Regiment and stationed in Kota Gedeh. Later on the company was disbanded and its members spread out on the rest of 5-5^th Regiment Infanterie. On 16^th March the positions in Sentolo, Barongan and Bantoel was given over to 5e Regiment Stoottroepen.
On 18th March 1949 the 5-5^th Infantry Regiment was station in Djocjacarta were it stayed until the evacuation of that city on 29^th June 1949. On 1^st July 1949 the 5-5^th Infantry Regiment took over positions around Klaten from Infanterie I KNIL and 4-9^th Infantry Regiment but it was given no rest in this area either. After this area was given over to the TNI the 5-5^th Infantry Regiment moved to Koedoes. And on 18th December 1949 the 5-5^th Infantry Regiment was stationed in Oengaran were it was relieved on 13^th March 1950 by the 425^th Infantry Battalion. In Semarang the Grenadiers was transferred back to their own unit. And on 20^th March 1950 the 5-5^th Regiment Infanterie was stationed in Buitenzorg waiting on its repatriation. On 20^th April 1950 the 5-5^th Regiment Infanterie left onboard “Nelly” arriving back in the Netherlands on 2^nd May 1950.
